  abstract  = {This article provides an overview of similarities and differences of local and regional indicator systems for sustainability. While there is a high degree of correspondence in basic matters (e.g., the definition of sustainable development), there are differences regarding the substance dealt with and the choice of indicators. A table presents characteristics of existing indicator systems and contains valuable information for local actors who plan to introduce such a system. Finally, it is concluded that currently indicator systems at the local level fall short of expectations and lag behind their possibilities. The article discusses reasons and presents a modular structure of indicator systems taking into account target groups and functions.},

  abstract  = {In den letzten Jahren wurden in den Kommunen Nachhaltigkeitsindikatorensysteme entwickelt und eingesetzt. Anspruch der Arbeit ist es, die dabei gewonnenen Erkenntnisse zu b{\"u}ndeln und aufzubereiten sowie die aktuelle Diskussion zusammenzufassen. Dies soll Grundlage f{\"u}r eine gezielte Fortentwicklung und die weitere Diffusion kommunaler Nachhaltigkeitsindikatorensysteme sein. Das F+E-Vorhaben befasst sich dazu mit folgenden Themenstellungen: - Synopse und Auswertung existierender Nachhaltigkeitsindikatorensysteme auf lokaler, regionaler und {\"u}berregionaler Ebene, - Kompatibilit{\"a}t lokaler sowie regionaler und {\"u}bergeordneter Indikatorensysteme, - Anforderungen an die praxisorientierte Konzeption von kommunalen Nachhaltigkeitsindikatorensystemen, - Schlussfolgerungen, Handlungsempfehlungen und Ans{\"a}tze zur Weiterentwicklung kommunaler Nachhaltigkeitsindikatorensysteme.},
